Robotics spending (including drones) in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to reach US$125.4 billion by 2022, according to new report – and that doesn’t include Japan.
This is triple the amount of total robotics spending in 2017, the report notes.
According to the latest update of the IDC Worldwide Semiannual Robotics and Drones Spending Guide, spending in the APAC region (excluding Japan) will grow at a compound annual rate (CAGR) of 25.7% from 2018 through to 2022.
The APAC region is the largest market for robotics applications and is expected to account for more than 62% of world's total robotics market in 2022.
"Driven by customer demands for product quality, delivery, and mass customisation collaborative robots (cobots) are taking off in industrial applications, especially for high mix, low volume, and short cycle time environment," said Dr. Jing Bing Zhang, Research Director for IDC Worldwide Robotics at IDC Manufacturing Insights.
"While being safe is a paramount prerequisite for any cobot, the market is already shaping the development of cobots towards 5S: safety, security, smartness, simplicity and standardisation," said Zhang.
China takes a significant share of the Asia Pacific robotics (including drones) market. Its spending on robotics is expected to reach $77 billion, representing 61% of Asia's total spending in 2022.
Biggest spenders
From an industry sector perspective, the manufacturing and resources sector, which includes discrete manufacturing, process manufacturing, resources and construction, remains the largest spender on robotics (including drones) throughout the forecast period.
It is expected to account for over 67% of the region's total spending in 2022. This is followed by the public sector, which will chalk up about 11% of the total spending in 2022.
From a technology perspective, spending on robotics systems (including drones), which includes industrial, service and consumer robots and after-market hardware, is forecast to grow to $80 billion in 2022.
The Worldwide Semi-annual Robotics and Drones Spending Guide quantifies the robotics and drone opportunities from a region, industry, use case, and technology perspective.
Spending data is available for more than 64 use cases across 20 industries in nine regions.
Data is also available for 17 robotics system technologies and 16 drone systems technologies.
The data is designed to help suppliers targeting the market to identify market opportunities and execute an effective strategy.
